Thirty-five volunteers from the Baldwyn /Booneville and Saltillo area participated in the Park-Clean up day at Brice’s Crossroads National Battlefield site and interpretive on April 5.

Volunteers picked up trash, dead limbs, debris and cleaned interpretive signs at the 1400-acre battlefield site. Grave sites at the Bethany Presbyterian Church and Confederate Cemetery located at the crossroads were also be cleaned. Cheeseburgers were provided by McDonalds of Baldwyn and Food Giant Stores provided drinks. Volunteers who participated in the day’s activities were given T-shirts  and embrodried patches provided by The History Channel.

“The battlefield and Museum commission are very grateful to everyone who participated in this clean up effort to prepare the site for visitors this spring and summer,” said Edwina Carpenter, director of the site.

Special thanks go to the Baldwyn Fire Department’s Jr. Firefighters who cut bushes and trees at the cemetery. They also learned a lot about Baldwyn and Bethany’s past.

Park Day, now in its eleventh year, is an annual hands-on preservation event created by Civil War Preservation Trust to assist local groups with the maintenance of Civil War sites.  The CWPT has helped preserve the battlefield by assisting the Brice’s Crossroads National Battlefield Commission with the purchase of 1400 acres at the site. The City of Baldwyn owns and maintains the visitors and Interpretive Center.
