Dressed in Confederate uniforms, members
of the Freeman's Battery Forrest's
Artillery Camp #1939, Sons of Confederate Veterans, dedicated the monument they
funded and erected to Morton's Battery and Capt. John W. Morton, Chief of
Artillery
under Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. The ceremony was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday,
June 11 at the Brice's Crossroads Battlefield site. The site chosen for
the
erection of the monument is near the Union line of retreat at a pivotal site.
Four
three-inch rifled cannon were sent forward to this hill where Morton's and
Rice's
Batteries pounded the Union troops with double shotted canister.

The commemorative address and
description of Morton's Artillery's role in the battle
was presented by Edward F. Williams, III of Memphis, Tennessee. Williams is
Chairman
of the Tennessee Wars Commission Committee.

Sgt. Michael Darling played "Dixie"
followed by dramatic rifle
and cannon salutes. The dedication program closed in prayer, with
all being then invited to come forward and view the monument.
