Discovery Day
Children ages 8-13 are invited to the sixth annual Childrens’ Discovery Day at the Brice’s Crossroads Battlefield and visitors center on Friday, June 6 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Children will visit the visitors center and the battlefield where civil war reenactors, craftsmen and musicians will demonstrate what life was like for soldiers and civilians during the civil war. They will also have an opportunity to taste food that soldiers ate during the Civil War. They will make stops at many "centers" hosted by re-enactors on the battlefield site and experience a full day of discoveries including a scavenger hunt and campfire cooking. Discovery Day is held every year near the anniversary of the battle which was fought on June 10, 1864,” said Edwina Carpenter, director. The Center and battlefield commissions sponsor the annual discovery day. Authentic re-enactors will share with children about civil war uniforms, weapon and ammunitions, and history of the battle. Also, they will have an oppotrunity to learn about musical instruments of the era and sing civil war songs around the campfire. The charge is $5. This includes programs and campfire food, as well as a sandwich. Parents are encouraged and invited to participate. The program will include a tour of the visitor’s center and with a scavenger hunt in the 155-year old Bethany Presbyterian Church cemetery. They will find the oldest grave, families who settled the area, and collect information about Rev. Samuel Agnew. Agnew wrote a diary about his life at Brice’s Crossroads during the battle and throughout his service as pastor at the Bethany Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. “This is a wonderful opportunity for children to experience life as a soldier and come to understand about their heritage and about the historic site from a kid’s point of view. Each year the children enjoy the day and the food. Contact the center at 662-365-3969 for information or e-mail Carpenter at bcr@dixie-net.com.
